In the middle of the night the communistic party come to arrest him, he begins having flashbacks of when he was arrested in Germany and tortured under interrogation. They let him sit in this cellular phvirtuoso until he is to be interrogated by 2 different men, brilliance of which he knows from the past and who he is actually friends with and one who is an unmatchable image for the new Stalinism type of leadership in Soviet Russia. In this prison that he is stuck in they nervous strain and keep the prisoners as isolated from other prisoners as possible, scantily Rubashov manages to find a way to communicate with another prisoner. The two prisoners talk back and forth through tapping the alphabet on pipes within their cells. This is about the time when Rubashov has another flashback of his foreign missions to arcminute Germany, where the USSR communist were falling apart. When Rubashov is finally taken to the examining magistrate, it turns out that his interrogator is one of his older friends, Ivanov.
